Vijay got a chance to work as a lead actor for the first time in the film Nalaiya Thirpu, directed by his father. His father was the director of this film. This film was released in 1992 which did not do much. Then in 1992, his film Sendhurapandi was released, this film earned a lot at the box office. But he got his first success from the 1994 film Rasigan. The film earned a decent amount at the box office. Vijay also got popularity from this film. After this film, Vijay gave many hits.

Then Vijay decided that if Sangeeta believes in Hinduism, then he will get married according to the Hindu religion. Both got married on 25 August 1999. At present they both have two children.
