'Jan Nayagan' Movie Review: Vijay's Final Film Is Overshadowed by Politics, 3-Hour Runtime Tests Patience
Jul 23,2026
Vijay's much-awaited farewell film, Jan Nayagan, arrives with massive expectations, marking the superstar's final appearance on the big screen before his full-time political journey. While fans hoped for an unforgettable send-off, director H. Vinoth delivers a film where political messaging takes center stage, leaving the emotional core and storytelling behind.
The film attempts to combine action, politics, social issues, and emotional drama into one package, but its overstuffed screenplay and 3-hour-3-minute runtime make the experience feel stretched. Despite Vijay's commanding screen presence and Anirudh Ravichander's powerful music, Jan Nayagan struggles to leave a lasting impression.
Jan Nayagan Story: A Political Action Drama That Loses Focus
The story follows Vetri (Vijay), a prisoner whose influence extends far beyond prison walls. Jailer Srikanth (Gautham Vasudev Menon) recognizes Vetri's humanity and entrusts him with the responsibility of fulfilling the dream of his daughter Viji (Mamitha Baiju), who aspires to become an Army officer.
Meanwhile, international criminal John Himmler (Bobby Deol) plans to spread violence across the country, while journalist Kayal (Pooja Hegde) becomes entangled in the unfolding events.
Although the film begins with emotional depth, it soon shifts into a mix of political messaging, corruption, terrorism, women's empowerment, and power struggles. The result is a screenplay that frequently loses its direction, especially after the interval.
Vijay Shines, But the Screenplay Doesn't
Vijay delivers exactly what fans expect—power-packed entry scenes, stylish action sequences, energetic dialogue delivery, and unmatched screen presence.
However, even his charisma cannot fully compensate for the film's weak writing.
Mamitha Baiju delivers one of the strongest performances, especially during emotional scenes.
Bobby Deol looks impressive as the antagonist but receives limited opportunities to create a lasting impact. Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj, Nassar, Priyamani, and Gautham Vasudev Menon are underutilized despite their strong acting abilities.
Direction & Technical Review
Director H. Vinoth attempts to blend an emotional farewell with political themes, but the execution lacks balance.
Highlights
Strong cinematography with visually appealing frames.
Powerful background score by Anirudh Ravichander.
Stylish action sequences.
Drawbacks
Weak screenplay.
Excessive political messaging.
Overlong climax.
Inconsistent pacing.
Average visual effects.
Editing that could have trimmed nearly 30 minutes.
Music Remains the Biggest Strength
Anirudh Ravichander once again proves why he remains one of Indian cinema's top composers.
The background score significantly enhances Vijay's entry scenes and action moments, while the songs continue to resonate with fans.
Should You Watch Jan Nayagan?
If you're a Vijay fan, Jan Nayagan offers several whistle-worthy moments and celebrates the superstar's larger-than-life image.
However, for general audiences expecting a gripping story and emotional farewell, the film falls short. The weak screenplay, excessive runtime, and heavy political messaging prevent it from becoming the memorable farewell Vijay deserves.
Jan Nayagan Review: Final Verdict
Jan Nayagan had the opportunity to become a fitting cinematic farewell for one of Indian cinema's biggest stars. Instead, it becomes a politically driven spectacle where the story takes a back seat. Vijay delivers a committed performance, but even his star power cannot rescue an overlong and uneven screenplay.
