Sehari Movie Review : Entertains in parts but lacks souls

Feb 14,2022

The tale of a confused millennial trying to figure out what love is when in his early 20s is such a tried and tested trope – it’s getting old. Sehari also follows the same ol’ formula with director Gnana Sagar Dwaraka playing it safe by not experimenting with this age-old idea.

Varun (Harish Kanumilli) is a 24-year-old man-child whose girlfriend dumps him after college. He goes through all the nuances of a break-up like that and the director tries to generate some fun around it. The comic scenes are bland but if that’s your kind of sense of homour, this is perfect for you. His college scenes are shown in a flashback and no one is surprised that Varun is toxic and cannot for the life of him figure out what it means to be in love. In a bid to teach his ex a lesson, he decides to get married. When his parents find a match, he falls for the bride’s sister Amulya (Simran Choudhary) instead. She’s a fashion designer and doesn’t really believe in marriage. She has an interesting past and Varun can’t help but he drawn to her.

But because his friends are not on-board with the idea, he holds back from telling Amulya how he feels for her and finds himself creating a mess. Varun gets engaged to the woman his parents have chosen instead, creating further troubles. There’s even a rap battle that’s enjoyable and comes as a relief in midst of few subpar scenes. Both Abhinav Gomatham and Pranav Chaganty deserve applauds for that. Where the film falters is how a supposedly mature, independent and sure-footed Amulya starts falling for Varun, whom she previously termed as ‘immature’. Even the character doesn’t seem to have an answer nor do the makers. The second half of the film is bogged down by lazy writing, which is also a let-down.

Sehari shines however when it comes to the music. Prashanth R Vihari’s tunes will surely find their way to numerous playlists and stay there for a while. As a debut hero, Harsh could’ve gone with a stronger script because he’s impressive but he played it safe. Simran emotes well and looks gorgeous. Abhinav tries to use all of his Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi references but it doesn’t feel fresh anymore. The other actors do well too.

For a debut film, Sehari is not a terrible rom-com, it’s just not innovative or fresh either. If you’re not bored of the same stories the film industry keeps churning out, this one’s for you.
