‘Ramayana’: ‘Mahabharat’ Actor Gajendra Chauhan Reacts to Ranbir Kapoor’s Trailer, “I Wasn’t Impressed”

Aug 12,2026

Nitesh Tiwari's much-awaited ‘Ramayana’ has generated considerable buzz following the release of its trailer. While the trailer has received mixed reactions, actor Gajendra Chauhan, best known for playing Yudhishthira in B.R. Chopra's iconic Mahabharat, has now shared his opinion.

Chauhan said he was “not impressed” by the trailer and raised questions about whether audiences would readily accept Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram. However, he also praised Ranbir's appearance and called the casting of Arun Govil as Dasharatha a strong decision.

Gajendra Chauhan Says ‘Ramayana’ Trailer Didn’t Impress Him

Speaking to Hindi Rush, Gajendra Chauhan said he watched the trailer but was not particularly impressed by it.

He particularly criticised the presentation of Kaikeyi and the scene in which she demands Ram's exile. According to Chauhan, the scene lacked the emotional impact expected from such an important moment in the Ramayana.

He also felt that Kaikeyi's styling appeared too modern for the setting of the story.

What Did Gajendra Chauhan Say About Ranbir Kapoor as Ram?

Chauhan's biggest concern was not Ranbir Kapoor's appearance but the actor's already established image as a major Bollywood star.

According to him, audiences may find it difficult to separate a highly recognisable celebrity from the mythological character he is portraying.

Chauhan explained that actors with a very strong public persona can face a greater challenge when playing revered mythological figures because viewers already have a fixed image of those characters.

Gajendra Chauhan Praises Ranbir’s Look

Despite his reservations about the casting, Chauhan made it clear that he does not believe Ranbir looks unsuitable for the role.

He praised the actor's appearance in the trailer and acknowledged that Ranbir looks excellent in the character's get-up.

His criticism, therefore, centres more on the challenge of overcoming an established star image than on Ranbir's physical appearance.

Chauhan Recalls His Experience as Yudhishthira in ‘Mahabharat’

Gajendra Chauhan also referred to his own experience playing Yudhishthira in B.R. Chopra's Mahabharat.

He explained that although he had worked in films and numerous television serials before Mahabharat, he did not have a major public persona at the time.

According to Chauhan, his identity became strongly associated with Yudhishthira only after the series became popular.

He believes this was different from Ranbir Kapoor's situation, as the actor already has a well-established identity among Bollywood audiences.

“Difficult to Comment Until We Watch the Entire Film”

Chauhan also acknowledged that it would be premature to reach a final verdict based solely on the trailer.

He said the film needs to be watched in its entirety before its portrayal of the Ramayana and its characters can be properly judged.

This qualification is important because his comments are about the trailer, rather than a final assessment of the movie itself.

Arun Govil as Dasharatha Gets Chauhan’s Praise

While expressing reservations about several aspects of the trailer, Chauhan praised the casting of Arun Govil as Dasharatha.

Govil is already deeply associated with Lord Ram because of his iconic portrayal of the character in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan. His inclusion in Nitesh Tiwari's film has therefore attracted significant attention.

Chauhan described casting Govil as Dasharatha as one of the film's strongest decisions.

‘Ramayana’ Release Date

Nitesh Tiwari's ‘Ramayana’ is among the most anticipated Indian films. The first part is scheduled to arrive during Diwali this year.

With Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana and Arun Govil as Dasharatha, the film has already generated substantial interest.

The trailer reactions have added another layer to the anticipation, with viewers now waiting to see whether the full film can deliver the scale and emotional depth expected from the epic.
