This character of his had looted a lot of accolades. A few years later, he played a prince in Shyam Benegal's Zubeidaa. In a recent interview, Manoj revealed that he was quite shocked when he was offered the role of a prince in the film.

Actor Manoj Bajpayee says people often tell him that he is not good-looking with his face. He said that he came into the film industry at a time when there was a fixed idea of what a hero should look like, and felt that he did not fit that description. Manoj Bajpayee said that he could not believe that Shyam Benegal wanted him to play a prince in Zubeidaa, as Manoj felt that he did not look like a prince.

Manoj told that during his struggle days a 'very famous heroine' told him, 'Manoj, I don't like you.' But the actor said he had no objection as the idea was already ingrained in him. Even when director Shyam Benegal cast him in the film Zubeidaa, Manoj was speechless and asked the filmmaker if he was sure. Manoj felt that he did not fit Rajkumar's bill.

Manoj said that there is a different standard of how a hero should look in our cinema, he should always look good. But here I am thankful to Shyam Benegal. They decided to cast me in Zubeidaa. But at that time I went to him and asked, 'Why are you doing this? Don't cast me as a prince, I don't look like a prince. ' And he looked at me, and said, 'Why do you say that?' Then Benegal took out a picture of a real prince and asked me if the real-life prince looked better than him.
