The Supreme Court has strongly criticized the Karnataka High Court over the ban imposed on Kamal Haasan's Tamil film 'Thug Life' in Karnataka. The court said that the crowd cannot decide whether a film will be released or not. This matter started with Kamal Haasan's statement on the Kannada language. Let us know the full details of this news in easy Hindi.
Supreme Court's strict stance
On June 17, 2025, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Karnataka government regarding the ban on the release of Thug Life. A bench of Justice Ujjwal Bhuyan and Justice Manmohan said, "There should be the rule of law. No crowd or goons can decide what will be shown in theaters." The court also condemned the suggestion of the Karnataka High Court, in which Kamal Haasan was asked to apologize.
The Supreme Court transferred the matter to itself and sought a response from the Karnataka government within 24 hours.
How did the controversy start?
The controversy started when Kamal Haasan said at the audio launch event of Thug Life, “The Kannada language is born from Tamil.” This statement led to massive protests in Karnataka. Pro-Kannada organizations, such as Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, called it an insult to the Kannada language and demanded a ban on the release of the film. Some organizations even threatened to burn down theatres. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) also decided to ban the film and demanded an apology from Kamal Haasan.
Kamal Haasan's response
Kamal Haasan refused to apologize. He wrote a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber saying that his statement was misunderstood. He clarified, “I do not want to insult any language. I respect all languages.” Kamal Haasan said that if he is wrong, he is ready to apologize, but he feels that his statement was not wrong. He also said that he believes in democracy and law.
Karnataka High Court's stance
Kamal Haasan's production company, Raj Kamal Films International, had filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court for the release of the film and the safety of cinema halls. But the High Court refused to grant relief and advised Kamal Haasan to apologize. The court said, "You made the statement, now take it back. The film can earn crores in Karnataka, but if you do not respect the sentiments of the people, then stop earning."
'Statement should be answered with a statement'
The Supreme Court has questioned this attitude of the High Court. The court said, "If a statement is wrong, then it should be answered with a statement, not by threatening to burn down cinema halls." The court also said that the people of Karnataka may disagree with Kamal Haasan's statement, but their fundamental rights should be protected. Thug Life has received a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), so it cannot be stopped from being released. The court directed the Karnataka government to ensure the screening of the film.
