Joram is releasing in theaters on Friday, a week after the release of big-budget films Animal and Sam Bahadur. This film starring Manoj Bajpayee has received appreciation in many film festivals.
The film is directed and written by Devashish Makhija, whose previous film Bhonsle had won Manoj Bajpayee the National Award for Best Actor.
What is Joram's story?
The story begins with a tribal couple, Dasru (Manoj Bajpayee) and Vano (Tannishtha Chatterjee), living in Jhinpidi village in Jharkhand. Vano is singing tribal folk songs while sitting on a swing. Then there is silence and the story comes straight to Mumbai. Where both are working as laborers at a construction site.
They also have a three-month-old daughter, Joram. Tribal MLA Phulo Karma (Smita Tambe) comes to the site on the pretext of distributing sarees and solar lights. She is in search of Dasaru, as she holds him responsible for her son's murder. That night Vano is murdered.
Dasru runs away from there with his daughter. Ratnakar Bagul (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), a senior inspector in the Mumbai Police, is assigned the task of catching him. Dasaru reaches his village. Ratnakar is also sent to Jharkhand in search of him. Dasru was once associated with Maoists.
He did not like being forced to pick up a gun, so he ran away to Mumbai. Now how will Dasru save his daughter? Are the people from whom he has gone to the village asking for help his enemies? The film reaches the end after going through many such questions.
How is the screenplay of the film?
Like Devashish's previous films, this film too has some important issues amidst the story. Amidst the survival story of father and daughter, the story grows touching many issues like the removal of tribals from their land in the name of development, destruction of forests, oppression of Maoists on tribals who sell their land for money, etc.
The special thing about this story is that Devashish has presented it effectively within the short time limit. He has kept the dialogues to a minimum. The background score and facial expressions of the talented actors have been used extensively. The ending of the film keeps it closer to reality, where fighting the system is not that easy and is a happy ending.
Unlike his previous films, Devashish has tried to keep this in the commercial zone. The weak side of the film is that some of the characters have no faces, just names. In such a situation, his mention creates confusion. The issue of long shifts of Mumbai Police does not seem important in the story.
Ratnakar's sympathy for the unknown Dasru is also incomprehensible. The work of cinematographer Piyush Puti is commendable, he has captured every scene with utmost care. There is a scene in the film when Dasru returns to the village, the forests have been cut down, and that scene looks like a forest crematorium, which shocks.
Will not give land, will not give village, our song shows the pain of the tribals. While talking to his three-month-old daughter, Dasru tells about his village and that there used to be a forest and a pond here, which not only shows his loneliness but also gives a glimpse of villages losing their identity in the name of development.
