Heeramandi Review: Bhansali's 'Heeramandi' became famous in the OTT market, the top in grandeur lost its shine

We cannot teach Hindi language and traditions, for this, you will have to go to Hiramandi (the courtesan area in Lahore). Qudsia Begum (Farida Jalal) says this to her grandson Tajdar (Taha Shah) who has returned from studies in London in a scene of the first episode.

Through this, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is telling about the world of Nawabs and the dominance of courtesans in Hiramandi. This is the world where the debauchery of the Nawabs is happily accepted by the women of their families.

Tawaifs are called to decorate the gathering, but in Hiramandi they are also invited as guests and given respect. No one even has any objection. This behavior and conduct is possible only in the fictional world of Bhansali's Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.

What is the story of Hiramandi?
The story is set in the backdrop of Hiramandi, Lahore in the pre-independence era and centers on three courtesan sisters. There is no intimacy in the relationships between sisters. At the beginning of the series, Rehana (Sonakshi Sinha) sells the newborn son of her younger sister Mallika (Abha Ranta).

Rehana then talks about selling Mallika also. Enraged by this, Mallika kills Apa by strangulating him. Young sir Zulfikar (Adhyayan Suman) supports him in this. The eyewitnesses to this murder are Mallika's younger sister Waheeda (Sanjeeda Shaikh) and Rehana's nine-year-old daughter Faridan.

Mallika sells Faridan and becomes the owner of a brothel, who likes her daughters to call her Huzoor instead of Ammi. The story goes ahead. Hard-hearted Mallika is a powerful courtesan of Heeramandi. She doesn't even forgive her daughters' mistakes.

Mallika wants to hand over her power to her younger daughter Alamzeb (Sharmin Sehgal). Alamzeb, fond of poetry, does not want to become a courtesan. He meets Tajdar (Taha Shah) at a gathering of Nawabs. Both of them fall in love with each other at first sight.

Meanwhile, young Faridan (Sonakshi Sinha) comes to avenge her mother's death. She first snatches Mallika's daughter Bibbojan's (Aditi Rao Hydari) husband Wali Muhammad (Fardeen Khan) from her. Bibbo Jaan is also secretly taking part in the freedom struggle.

Her mother-in-law is unaware of this. On the other hand, Faridan makes Alamzeb and Tajdar her pawns in this fight. Just before the nose ring is to be removed, Faridan conspires and makes Alam escape. The story is about who will defeat whom in the fight for the succession of Hiramandi between Mallikajaan and Faridan who is burning in the fire of revenge.

How was Bhansali's OTT debut?
Since 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ramleela', Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been continuously doing new experiments in period and costume drama. After Bajirao Mastani, Padmavat, and Gangubai Kathiawadi, he has now made his debut on the digital platform with the much-awaited Heeramandi.

Here too he has succeeded in creating a dreamy, colorful world away from reality. Heeramandi tries to take you to a different world. This is the world where the characters of courtesans are strong. Every courtesan has a master. They have relationships only with them.

However, there are many shortcomings in the screenplay. For example, that era of Lahore was of Urdu, where there was an abundance of poetry and there was sweetness in the tongue. The lack of tongue and sweetness is painful here. A lot of care has to be taken as to when the story moves from flashbacks to the present.

He has not been able to do complete justice to all the characters here. Where does Lajjo (Richa Chaddha) come from? Nothing is known. Mallika constantly insults Waheeda. Frustrated with the insult, Waheeda is looking for revenge but seems incapable of making any noise.

His daughter's track is also incomplete. The revelations related to Adhyayan Suman's character do not bring any twist to the story. Ustad (Indresh Malik), who is called the newspaperman of Hiramandi, easily brings many girls to the brothel for Faridan.

There are many such scenes in which it seems that Sanjay has not been able to fully delve into the dark life of courtesans who live with luxury. Except for Tajdar, the characters of all the other Nawabs appear weak, especially Fardeen Khan.
