Middle East-based Ali Pasha, who runs the biggest terror outfit in the world, has set his sights on India. However, to get him, Indian intel agencies need to nab Tariq Sikandar, who handles all his finances. Johny (Akku Kulhari), Stalin (Ashok Chaudhary), Mehak (Khatera Hakimi) and Ajay (Sumend Wankhede) are the four agents appointed by RAW (Research & Analysis Wing) of the mission of capturing Tariq and bringing him in, alive. During the course of their mission, they get Salma (Tanishaa Mukerji), who claims to be Tariq’s sister-in-law. Whether and how the RAW mission is accomplished, is what this spy thriller is all about.
REVIEW: In the same vein as other espionage films set in India and Pakistan, writer-director Eshwar Gunturu has created another story based on the same premise of tracking down the bad guy. He has put in sincere efforts to make a gripping thriller with plenty of twists and turns to keep the viewers glued throughout. However, when compared to other spy mission flicks, such as ‘Baby,’ and ‘Phantom,’ ‘Code Name Abdul’ feels sluggish and lacks the intense performances that work as an asset for such genres, relying heavily on dialoguebaazi.
Team of best RAW agents—codenamed Johny, Stalin, Mehak and Ajay—are after Tariq, who possesses all information about terrorist Ali Pasha and his crimes. Finding him is also critical in order to protect India from a new threat. But instead of Tariq they get Salma, who claims to be his sister-in-law. They take her to the safehouse and begin interrogating her; but the story hinges on whether she cooperates with them and provides some vital information, or whether she simply plays games with them.
Salma’s cross-examination leads the agents to other people, resulting in a number of unexpected twists in the story. The performances, on the other hand, are underwhelming and detract from the thriller's impact. Tanishaa Mukerji looks nice from certain angles, but the mole on her face is rather distracting. Above that, her dialogue delivery isn’t particularly impressive. The only scenes she shines in are her action stunts, especially her fight with Mehak. From all the characters, Khatera Hakimi as Mehak is the most remarkable as a short-tempered and ruthless agent.
The other three agents—Ashok Chaudhary as Stalin, Sumend Wankhede as Ajay and the one leading this project Akku Kulhari as Johny—are misfits, in terms of appearance.
The background score by Amar Mohile is not exceptional, but the last song, Sonu Nigam's ‘Main Saaya Tera,' which plays during the credits, is soothing.
Thanks to the cinematography by Ajayender Reddy Loka, 'Code Name Abdul' is visually stylish (covering exotic locations such as where the RAW safehouse is situated), but it loses steam at times. Overall, it squanders its opportunity to be an exciting thriller due to underwhelming performances.
