Charmi Kaur was born on 17 May 1987 in Vasai, adjacent to Mumbai. His father Deep Singh Bhupat had a nut bolt factory in Goregaon East. Suddenly he was paralyzed and the factory had to be closed. Charmi Kaur says, 'We got into a lot of trouble when the factory closed due to father's illness. There was no money to pay the fees in the school. Sometimes my neighbor's Shetty uncle paid my school fees. Father was knowledgeable in Vastu Shastra, so due to that, the expenses of the house were somehow covered. I was 13 then and I started feeling that I should also do some work.'

She says, 'One day I was coming home from the gurdwara with my brother Kuldeep Singh when I met a casting director on the way. On seeing me say that you are very beautiful, will you work in films? My brother got angry after listening to him. On this, the casting director told that there is a film with Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. I had come out of the gurudwara praying that they would rescue me from this crisis and it seemed that my prayer had been heard.

The housemates were against acting

Charmi Kaur has been a huge fan of Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. When he told his parents that he got a chance to work in Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor's film. So he was not ready to work in films. Charmi says, 'I cried all night and explained to mom that once let me do work. On this pretext, I will meet Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, and Abhishek Bachchan. Somehow Mummy got ready and got permission to work only once. But when it started from here, it just happened.

Charmi Kaur says, 'I went to Mehboob Studio to shoot 'Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon'. Where the shooting of the song 'Bani Re Bani Prem Ki Deewani' was going on. I was sitting just behind Abhishek Bachchan. When her make-up man came to fix her make-up, she saw a glimpse of me in the mirror and turned back and said, you should become a heroine. Hearing him, a gleam came into my eyes and a voice came into my mind as to what he had said. After coming home, I told my parents about Abhishek Bachchan. After this, my aunt gave me money for the photo shoot and I also started auditioning for the lead role in films after that.

This is how I got to work in South films

Charmi Kaur was doing small roles after 'Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon' and then in Mumbai, she met South director Bhim Neni Srinivasa Rao in the year 2002, who was looking for a heroine for his Telugu film 'Ni Thodo Kavali'. . Charmi says, 'After this film, my five-six films in South were flops. I didn't know anything about hit flop then. Papa used to live together, he used to finalize everything, at that time I did not even have a bank account. In the year 2004, when my film 'Sri Anjaneyam' became a hit, the series of hit films started and till now I have worked with all the big stars of the South.

Acting for 15 years and then became a producer

On becoming a producer, Charmi Kaur says, "Business is in my blood. My father used to give me books on business to read. I worked as an actress for 15 years. My last film as an actress is 'Jyoti Lakshmi'. I also produced this film in association with director Puri Jagannath. We started a production house in the year 2015 by the name of 'Puri Connects', I am the founder member of this company. After 'Jyoti Laxmi' we produced five more films. 'Liger' is our first pan-India film as a producer.
