After Family Man 2, Priyamani is back with another outing titled Bhamakalapam. Headlined by Bharat Kamma, Bhamakalapam is a delicious thriller with elements of dark comedy sprinkled all over. Bhamakalapam has some really exciting ideas and director Abhimanyu executes them for the most part. But, the team also leaves some glaring errors, which are hard to look past.
Bhamakalapam revolves around multiple sub-plots. A team headed by Nayar (John Vijay) is looking for a Faberge egg worth Rs 200 crore. Meanwhile, a home cook, Anupama Mohan (Priyamani), who runs a YouTube channel, is known for gossiping. Her inquisitiveness lands her in trouble. There is one murder after another. How Priyamani comes out of this mess forms the story.
Bhamakalapam starts on a promising note. We see a lamb crossing the patch which results in a car accident. This accident changes the lives of a bunch of people. Director Abhimanyu's screenplay takes the non-linear route and it helps in keeping the suspense intact.
Anupama and her house help Shilpa (Sharanya Pradeep) become partners in crime to cover up a murder. This particular sequence is tastefully done with the right doses of thriller and comedy.
One of the positive aspects of Bhamakalapam is the presence of strong female characters. Almost all the male characters act as catalysts. It is the women who take the story forward. Be it Priyamani's restrained performance or Sharanya Pradeep's effortless characterisation, the film has exciting ideas executed to perfection. A pregnant female investigation officer (Shanti Rao) and a domestic abuse survivor named Saira add suspense to the story.
However, the film falters during the execution of the murders. The protagonist hides a dead body and even goes on to cut a man's leg inside her home with her husband in the next room. No smell or blood is oozing out when his leg is being cut. These glaring loopholes spoil the entire mood the director built all along. The climax revelation is stretched beyond a point and hence it doesn't create the desired impact.
Coming to the performances, Priyamani and Sharanya Pradeep are the heroes of Bhamakalapam. The supporting roles played by Shanti Rao, John Vijay and Kancharapalem Kishore are adequate.
Bhamakalapam is a neatly crafted thriller done well for the most part. If only the logical loopholes were taken care of, the film would have had a better impact.
