During the Delhi leg of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', Kamal Haasan was seen traveling with Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders. Kamal Haasan and Rahul Gandhi met again after a full week of the visit. During this meeting, actors Kamal Haasan and Rahul Gandhi discussed many issues and explained the reason for making their film 'Hey Ram Bapu'. Kamal tells during the conversation, 'When I was a teenager, my upbringing had made me a bitter critic of Gandhiji'. But when Kamal was 24-25 years old, he had the desire to know about Mahatma Gandhi and he did a lot of research about him and soon became an admirer of his principles.

Taking the conversation forward, Kamal says, the reason for making the film 'Hey Ram' Bapu was to apologize to Mahatma Gandhi. And to rectify myself, I made the film Hey Ram. The film depicts the story of an assassin who wants to kill Gandhiji. But as he gets closer to that person, he changes. This is the story of that film. This was my way of apologizing to Bapu. I think the worst form of criticism is murder. Only cowards can do this.
