Born on November 22, 1939, in Sathiala, Amritsar, Jaswant Singh Gill did his early schooling at the Khalsa School and graduated from Khalsa College in 1959. Jaswant Singh Gill was working as an engineer in a coal mine in Raniganj, West Bengal. On that fateful day of November 16, 1989, miners at Mahaveer Colliery of Eastern Coalfields Limited were blasting the walls of coal, in the process when the adjacent underground water table breached, water gushed in and flooded the mine. The situation has happened. Bahadur Jaswant Singh Gill started the rescue operation with full courage without losing courage.
