Biography:

Rimi Sen (born 21 September 1981) is an Indian actress who appears in Bollywood films.

Sen was born as Shubhomitra Sen in Kolkata, West Bengal. She completed her schooling from Bidya Bharati Girls' High School in the year 1998. She completed her graduation in Commerce from University of Calcutta.

Since childhood Sen nursed the dream of becoming an actress. After completing her studies, she persuaded her mother to accompany her to Mumbai. She later said that she wasn't encouraged by anyone in her family except for her grandfather. After doing the rounds, she got into ads including one Coca-Cola ad with Aamir Khan. She was instantly noticed and her first offer for films started rolling in.

Rimi made her debut as a lead actress in Telugu movie Nee Thodu Kavali. Her debut Hindi film, Vijay Galani's Hungama, released in 2003. It was a comedy film, in which she co-starred with Akshaye Khanna, Aftab Shivdasani, Paresh Rawal, as well as other actors.

She followed it with appearance in big budget movies like Dhoom (2004), Garam Masala (2005) and Golmaal (2006). She also did a cameo in 2006 film Dhoom 2, and followed it with Johnny Gaddaar alongside newcomer actor Neil Nitin Mukesh. In 2008, she appeared in De Taali and in Sankat City in 2009.

Rimi is currently going by the screen name Rimmi. She explains the name change as a career move: there are many other Sens working in Bollywood right now, and a single name may help her stand out from the crowd and stay apart from others.

In 2006, when Rimi was at the peak of her career, she said in an interview during Rohit Shetty's Golmaal promotion, "Rohit Shetty is amazing as a director. He can make even a black African look pretty." This statement of her created a huge controversy and protests. The British African group Ligali had openly condemned her statement and said the fact that the majority of readers saw Sen's comments as acceptable exposed "how normalised anti-African ideology is within Bollywood and its audiences". As a result, her career started dwindling and since then she has appeared in very few films and that too in second lead or in a supporting role.
